Participants needed for lactose intolerance study

An MS student in the lab, Gloria Angima, is conducting research on the effects of galactooligosaccharides or lactose supplementation on lactose intolerance. Gloria is mentored by Drs. Dave Dallas and Si Hong Park.

 The goal of this study is to determine whether prebiotics can modulate the human gut microbiome resulting in alleviation of lactose intolerance symptoms.

The study consists of a one-week screening period, 4 weeks of a supplementation period, and a 4-week washout period (total 9 weeks). 

During the supplementation period, subjects will be randomly assigned to consume GOS or lactose daily for 4 weeks.

●     Stool samples will be collected weekly

●     Stool samples will be collected at home by subjects

Inclusion criteria:

•          Healthy adults

•          Lactose intolerance (formal and informal diagnosis)

•          Fluency in English

•          No gastrointestinal diseases or disorders, or history of GI surgery

•          Have a primary healthcare provider

Exclusion criteria

Habitual use of laxatives and antacids. Diabetes, pregnancy, use of antibiotics, pre/probiotics one month prior to the study; any medical or psychological condition that would preclude individuals from completing the study, dairy protein allergy, use of lactose pills such as “Lactaid” should be avoided.
