Search and Rescue serving
Mt. Hood and the Columbia Gorge

Crag Rats

The Hood River Crag Rats is America’s oldest mountain Search and Rescue organization.

We are specifically certified for technical rock and avalanche rescues. We are a volunteer group based in Oregon’s Hood River County and serving Mt. Hood, the Columbia Gorge, and assisting SAR groups in neighboring counties.

From Mt. Hood’s summit, glaciers, and ice-clad cliffs …

… to the waterfalls and ravines of the Columbia Gorge …

… the Crag Rats wish you safe travels in our ‘Hood. But if things should ever go south, the Crag Rats will do our best to get you home safely.

Our Huts

  • Wedding & Event Venue

Spring through fall, our spectacular Crag Rats meeting venue fills up fast, primarily for weddings, though it shines equally well for corporate or family events.

  • Historic Cloud Cap Inn

The Crag Rats maintain the Cloud Cap Inn at 6,000 feet on the north side of Mt Hood. The Inn is our advance base for mountain rescues and is not open to the public.
