Do we want to make the world a better place?

(A meditation)

Love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind and strength
And your neighbour as yourself.  (Luke 10:27)

Hate evil, love good;
maintain justice in the courts  (Amos 5:15 NIV)

Hate evil, love good;
establish justice in the gate  (Amos 5:15 NKJV)

Hate what is evil, love what is right,
and see that justice prevails in the courts  (Amos 5:15 GNT)

Hate evil and love good,
then work it out in the public square  (Amos 5:15 Msg)

Yes, first and foremost, always to be our reason for being,
love and worship the great and glorious God, ruler and creator of all
in whose Image are we made.

Then, in loving our neighbour,
Seek to bring him to Jesus, Son of God, through whom we find forgiveness and new life
Do good
Hate the evil that might threaten to befall him, and his children and his children’s children
Restore him, nurture and protect him
Challenge and confront the evil where this is possible

In working each of these things out
On an individual neighbour level
In our neighbourhood
In wider community, nationally and internationally through our field of endeavour and mountains of influence
Having and exercising a Voice for good
And see, maintain, establish, justice – work it out in the courts, in the city gate, in the public square (note the imperatives)

In our particular field of expertise and endeavour, in the market place, acting with justice, seeking to make people whole
Healing, relieving, comforting (“To cure sometimes, to relieve often, to comfort always”)
Enhancing quality of life; physically, emotionally and spiritually – through education, individually and in community
To have and be a voice in matters relating to our nation and its future, ensuring as much as possible a safe place for our children and our children’s children
And to preserve the freedom to have that voice.
