Richard Afolayanka (Uniondale, N.Y/Uniondale) and baseball junior
Albert Baez (Fort Worth, Texas/Timber Creek) were each named Mountain East Conference (MEC) Players of the Week announced the league office Monday.
Afolayanka earned MEC Offensive Player of the Week honors after he netted a pair of goals to help Wheeling to its first win of the season at Alderson Broaddus. His second goal was the game-winner in the Cards 3-2 win over the Battlers.
Baez earned MEC Pitcher of the Week distinction after he picked up two saves and a win for the Cardinals last week. He pitched three scoreless innings in relief to earn the win against Concord, and then earned saves in both ends of the doubleheader against West Virginia Wesleyan. In the final game of the day against the Bobcats, Baez came on with the bases loaded and just one out, and retired the final two batters to preserve the win. On the week, pitched 4.2 innings in three appearances, did not surrender a hit and struck out three.
