The WIC Program

Offered through the USDA, WIC stands for “Women, Infants and Children”

The focus of the WIC program in San Diego. is to prevent health problems during pregnancy and postpartum, as well as during early infancy and childhood. The program strives to improve the health of women and children during these important times of growth and development by providing supplemental food and nutrition education for eligible low-income families.

WIC guidelines and qualifications:

To qualify for the WIC Program in San Diego, you must meet the income guidelines and be in any of the categories below:

Pregnant women
Breastfeeding women up to one year of having a baby (postpartum)
Non-breastfeeding women up to six months postpartum
Women who had a pregnancy loss in the past six months
Infants and children under five years old
All foster children under five years old
Fathers, grandparents, and caretakers may receive WIC food benefits for eligible infants and children

WIC provides:

What is WIC?

WIC is a program for mothers and their children provided by the state or federal government, and is based on annual income. Annual gross income guidelines start at about $33,874 annually for a family of two and increase by six to eight thousand dollars per child as family size grows. A pregnant woman is counted as a family of two.

Who Is Eligible?

Pregnant or breastfeeding women who are at nutritional risk may be eligible for the WIC program. Children (up to age five) at risk of not having nutritionally balanced diets due to income restrictions are also eligible. To see if you qualify for the WIC Program, call (888) 477-6333.

What Is Nutrition Risk?

All WIC participants eating patterns are evaluated by trained nutrition staff. They look for nutrients that may be missing or deficient in the diet, putting them at nutrition risk. WIC staff will also evaluate participant’s medical history, height, weight, growth patterns and iron (hemoglobin) status. These are screenings are based on federal guidelines.

Where Is WIC Available?

What Food Benefits Do WIC Participants Receive?

WIC provides a variety of nutritious foods. Foods that may be purchased include:

Iron-fortified infant formula and infant cereal
Whole-grain breakfast cereals
Fruit and vegetable juice rich in vitamin C
Eggs, milk, cheese and yogurt
Peanut butter
Dried beans, peas or lentils
Canned goods such as beans, peas, and fish
Baby food
Whole grains including whole wheat bread, tortillas, and pasta
Fresh, frozen or canned fruits and vegetables
Tofu and soymilk

Families receive a WIC Card that is electronically loaded each month with each participant’s food benefits. The WIC Card is a convenient way to shop for WIC foods at most grocery stores.

What Support Is Offered for Breastfeeding?

We provide the following support services to help moms and babies breastfeed successfully:

Prenatal breastfeeding education, available in person or online
Breastfeeding Peer Counseling Program during pregnancy and beyond
Secrets of Baby Behavior education for new moms
One-on-one feeding assessments, breastfeeding support with a lactation consultant or breastfeeding specialist
An electric breast pump loan program for mothers who are unable to breastfeed or are returning to work, military service, or school
Manual breast pumps and other supplies
Additional food coupons for breastfeeding mothers until baby’s first birthday.
