Help the Hiatt Residents

Donation protected
Can you help us get to $40,000 by May 15th and help make a difficult situation a bit better for our neighbors?

Back in early July of 2021, the residents of the Jamison Mobile Home Park in Greensboro, NC started to get letters informing them that their park had been sold and that they had thirty days to leave. Many of the residents have lived there for over twenty years and were surprised that their landlords of many years would displace them from their homes so suddenly.  They didn't want to leave.

Sadly, after almost nine months of trying to find a solution that would allow them to stay - they have determined that they will need to relocate in the next few months, though exactly when this will happen is not yet clear. While this is disappointing, their speaking up and advocating has won them much more time in the homes they have loved (the first letter they received told them to leave by September 30th of 2021).

Their advocacy has also led to the creation of a Mass Displacement Fund by the City of Greensboro, which could possibly offer up to $10,000 in relocation assistance pending an application process.

Unfortunately, the residents do not yet know how much relocation assistance they will be offered. But we do know that moving trailers, moving a whole household, paying deposits at a new location, and getting electricity and water hooked up have already cost some of the residents who have found places to relocate to upwards of $15,000–a crushing amount for many of these families, who have had to go into debt to afford to move.

We are so disappointed that our neighbors will be leaving our Lindley Park and our local schools, but we want to do what we can to cushion the blow of this difficult and expensive move. We have already raised about $10,000 and have set a goal of raising $30,000 additional dollars by May 15th to support the eight remaining families. These funds will make a difficult situation a little less bleak, will make these families’ transitions smoother, and will show them that Lindley Park neighbors value our Hiatt St. neighbors, and want to do all we can to continue to support them even as they are sadly relocating away from our area.

If 300  supporters each donate $100 - we will reach our goal. (And every donation of every size helps! We have several churches and organizations planning to make larger donations. We know some people will donate more, and some will donate less - but it all adds up.)

Can you donate $100 to this cause? Or an amount that works for you and your family? Together we can get to $40,000 by May 15th and help make a difficult situation a bit better for our neighbors!
