Traffic Advisory: Bourbon Phase 2 Project

NEW ORLEANS — On Monday, July 22, weather permitting, the City of New Orleans, Department of Public Works’ construction contractor, Hard Rock Construction, LLC, will close the intersection of Bourbon and Dumaine streets to vehicular traffic for approximately four weeks to accommodate installation of new utilities. Fencing will be installed around the Dumaine intersection and about 40 feet into the 900 block in order to tie in the new, upsized water line and drain line

Public safety is our priority; security fencing/signage will be installed around the intersection and flaggers will be onsite to direct drivers and pedestrians.

The 800 block of Bourbon Street between St. Ann and Dumaine streets is also currently closed to vehicular while crews fully reconstruct the roadway with repaired and/or new water, sewer and drainage lines.

Due to the condition of the utilities beneath St. Ann Street between Dauphine and Bourbon Streets, the block will be fully reconstructed as part of the Bourbon Phase 2 project. Work will begin in the fall after the 800 and partial 900 blocks of Bourbon are complete. Entergy Gas and Entergy Electric will be working in advance of the City on this block to ensure safety beginning in early August.

The City is roughly 70 percent complete with the project; the contractor has fully reconstructed the roadway between St. Louis and Orleans streets (500-700 blocks) with upsized drainage, a better sewer system, new sidewalks and new, smoother pavement; as well as reconstructed the roadway between Orleans and St. Ann streets with upsized drainage and a better sewer system. Additionally, the lighting and security have been upgraded between St. Louis and St. Peter streets. Entergy Gas and Entergy Electric has completed upgrades to their services in the 500-800 blocks.

The $9.5 million cost-shared project, which is anticipated to run through fall 2019, was designed by Mott McDonald, LLC and will be constructed by Hard Rock Construction, LLC. Project partners include Entergy Electric, Entergy Gas, Cox Communications and AT&T. A full description of the project and weekly updates are available at:  http://roadwork.nola.gov/bourbon/ .

SAVE THE DATES: Join us for transit planning open houses
( July 22 – Thursday, July 25)
NEW ORLEANS – The Regional Planning Commission (RPC), the Regional Transit Authority (RTA) and the Office of Transportation are hosting a series of 11 public meetings in Orleans Parish as part of the transit network redesign project, New Links.

“This project is part of our goal to improve general mobility for our citizens, and is critical to the future of our transit system. Access to transportation is a right, not a privilege, and everyone in our City should be able to get to work in a timely manner by bus, streetcar, ferry or paratransit,” said Mayor LaToya Cantrell. “I look forward to kicking off these public meetings to get input from the public on how the system can be improved, and I am excited about the opportunity this project brings to our citizens.”

New Links is a year-long project to study public transit connectivity in Orleans, Jefferson, and St. Bernard parishes. The goal is to develop recommendations for a network redesign that will ultimately improve the frequency, reliability and integration of public transit across all three parishes. The RPC is leading the study, in partnership with the RTA and Jefferson Transit (JeT), with support from the City of New Orleans.

The 11 public meetings will run from
6 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.

It's a good week to find some new favorite wines...
Yes, it's July and it is ridiculously hot and humid. But if you are not on vacation, chances are you are looking for something to do in the evenings when we get a tiny respite from the sweltering weather. Well Swirl just happens to have a head spinning lineup of events this week that will give you the perfect excuse to come out and enjoy some delicious and unique wines from France, Italy, Oregon, Croatia and Slovenia. Check out the list below and please join us at any or all of these cool events!

Wednesday Night Flights, Croatia, Slovenia and Italy - Wines of the Adriatic Coast, 5:30-7:30PM: Crystal clear waters, consistent climate, salty ocean breezes, rugged rocky coastlines - Croatia, Slovenia and the eastern coast of Italy all enjoy the magnificent effects of the Adriatic Sea. The vineyards here are strongly influenced by the Alps that bring cold air in the evenings, prolonging the ripening season and retaining acidity levels. Sea breezes from the Adriatic during the day keep vineyards cool, dry and disease free. A wine lover's dream, these areas have been producing wine for centuries using indigenous varieties that complement their cuisine and lifestyles. In our Wednesday night flight this week we'll highlight 4 wine regions that benefit from their proximity to the Adriatic sea, delivering beautiful, unique wines that will make you want to dive deeper into these culturally rich areas. You'll try Babić, a grape variety from the Dalmation coast, a Refošk from Slovenia, Passerina from Le Marche and a Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo - 2 reds, a white and a rosé (sort of).

If you'd like a little something to snack on with your wine, Casey Foote will select and present a cheese pairing plate ($10 with flight, $15 without the flight). No standing in line for our Wednesday flights - you sit at a table, we come to you and pour tableside complete with lots of educational info on what you are drinking. The flight of 4 wines is $20 - reservations are highly recommended as we can only seat walk-ins if space allows. All wines and cheeses are available for purchase to have at Swirl or you can take them to go. Reserve your spot here -  A driatic

Sippin' & Jazzin' at the Jazz Museum, Thursday, 5:30-7:30PM - Join Swirl and Bizou Wines for an evening of local jazz and great wines in the beautiful outdoor courtyard of the New Orleans Jazz Museum. Enjoy a tasting of 12 wines from France, Italy and Oregon, live jazz by the University of New Orleans Jazz Ensemble and guided spotlight tours of the museum’s artifacts. Tickets are $21

Friday Free For All, 6-8PM Join Robin Riddell Jones of DeGrazia Imports for a great lineup of Italian wines fresh off the boat and into the Bizou Wines warehouse. Plus our friends from  Faubourg Farms  will be serving up their delicious small plates made with fresh local products. This tasting is free and open to the public, no reservations required.

Bastille Day French Fete Rescheduled! Saturday, July 27, 5-9:30PM, Feeling French? Celebrate Bastille Day in the neighborhood of French Creole aristocracy! There will be dancing between 5 PM and 9:30 PM. Jaime Lynn Vessel will play 5:00-6:45PM and Harmonouche with Raphael Bas will play from 7:35 to 9:45PM. Cynthia Scott will sing her stirring rendition of “La Marseillaise” at 5:30. Freedom

  • A new American play, Freedom tells the story of a Holocaust survivor and an Irish immigrant who meet hours before their American naturalization ceremony. Freedom looks at the ways we yearn for freedom—the freedom to face the truth about ourselves with grace, acceptance, and forgiveness.

Freedom   tells the story of a Holocaust survivor and an Irish immigrant who meet by chance in the hours before their American naturalization ceremony. Bearing deep wounds from the past and carrying secrets too painful to tell, they forge a connection and learn they have more similarities than differences. Based in part on survivor testimony, this new American play looks at the many ways we yearn for freedom—not just “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness,” but also the freedom to face the truth about ourselves with grace, acceptance, and forgiveness.

Black moon, double meteor shower and more July 2019 astronomy events

Here's a look at some of the major events,  courtesy of AccuWeather :

  • July 29 and 30: Double meteor showers! For two nights near the end of the month, skywatchers can look south to see the peak of both the Southern Delta Aquarids and the Alpha Capricornids. The two will combine for a total of about 25 meteors per hour.
  •
  • July 31: Black Moon What is a black moon? It's the opposite of a blue moon, AccuWeather explains. Instead of two full moons in a month, a black moon refers to two new moons in a month. This is good news for astronomy enthusiasts since it means plenty of good opportunities for star-gazing.

The Victory Belles

The Victory Belles are a delightful vocal trio performing the music of the 1940s, serenading audiences at The National WWII Museum and across the globe. The music of the 1940s brought hope and joy to our GIs and those on the Home Front alike—and the Victory Belles keep that tradition alive in rich, three-part harmony. Their repertoire includes all the treasured gems of the WWII era plus patriotic classics including a musical salute to each branch of the US armed forces. Performing midweek matinees in BB's Stage Door Canteen . Reserve at the ticketing link.

El Encierro : The Running of the Bulls

El Encierro : The Running of the Bulls
The Running of the Bulls at San Fermin in Nueva Orleans (#SFNO #SFNO2019) is our homage to the world famous Encierro of Pamplona, Spain, a.k.a. The Running of the Bulls. Instead of bovines, our bulls are actually RollerBulls played by skaters selected from roller derby leagues around the world including New Orleans’ all-female flat-track derby team the Big Easy Rollergirls! Join us, more than thousands of runners and hundreds RollerBulls as we bring our version of Pamplona’s Fiesta to New Orleans!
Doors open at The Sugar Mill at 6:30AM. The Running of the Bulls happens promptly at 8:00AM.
Following the encierro, registered participants will be treated to one helluva show! This year’s headliner is local favorites Morning 40 Federation! These guys are sure to bring the noise and excitement! There is lots of other entertainment on site for our  REGISTERED  guests.

La Fiesta de Pantalones

La Fiesta de Pantalones
First a brief quote from the American cinema classic Anchorman:
  • Brick Tamland: Excuse me, Veronica?
  • Veronica Corningstone: Yes? What is it, Brick?
  • Brick Tamland: I would like to extend to you an invitation to the pants party.”
Despite what the title may imply, there is no dress code regarding pants. But, we do encourage you to attend Pamplonese style: white shirt, white pants/shorts/skirt/dress, with red about the neck and waist. Consider that a starting point and get creative with your gear.
Our friends over at  The Rusty Nail  once again host this event, which starts immediately after the show ends at The Sugar Mill. So head over for drink specials and a continuation of the morning’s fiesta. $5 Disco Lemonades for all REGISTERED participants of #SFNO 2019, and they’ll be crankin’ the tunes with a DJ. The Rusty Nail has been a valued partner for many years. Please support those who support us!

El Pobre de Mí : Poor Me

El Pobre de Mí : Poor Me
The world breaks everyone, and afterward, some are strong at the broken places.– Ernest Hemingway
If you make it through Saturday’s Running of the Bulls, you’ll likely know what this saying means. You may be broken from RollerBulls, heat and sangria, but a little food, absinthe and burlesque will help mend those broken places.
The singing of the Pobre de Mí in Pamplona marks the end of Sanfermines. This is done at midnight on 7/14. Ours is considerably different, but so is the rest of our Fiesta!
Join Nola Bulls and Roxie Le Rouge’s  Big Deal Burlesque  as we celebrate one final day of Sanfermines in the best way we know how…eating, drinking and being all around merry!!! A Hemingway theme show capped off by a Papa Hemingway Look-a-like contest.
Lula Distillery will provide the food and drinks, the the rest is up to La Madrina and Roxie!
