TELL ME MOREThe Purple Plow Challenge is a bi-yearly science contest that encourages students across the country to come up with innovative solutions to problems related to food, hunger and sustainability.
There’s been fun projects, great submissions and big prizes handed out to classrooms across America!
As we all know, things are a little different these days, so we’ve opened up the current challenge to home learners. So whether your kids are pursuing STEM with a remote teacher or under your guidance - YOUR FAMILY can join in the challenge.
Purple Plow is a project of the American Farm Bureau Foundation for Agriculture made possible with a generous grant from Corteva Agriscience. The Foundation’s mission is to help Americans gain a better understanding of where their food comes from. We’re doing this STEM challenge in the hopes that it will inspire a new generation of scientists to address the important concerns of feeding a growing planet.
Right now we’re doing the Go with the Flow Challenge in which we’re learning about runoff and water quality. The goals is to come up with a solution that will help keep our waterways clean. If you want to participate, follow the steps on this page.
We promise to keep it mellow, we won’t spam you! We will send you reminders about the challenge deadline and also some fun insights on what other teams across the nation are doing.
There are two guides, you can find them both on the challenge page. Or just grab them below:
There are six steps in the challenge process, follow the instructions in each step (identify, imagine, design, create, test & improve, share). Plan to do the project over several days. Be sure to have fun and take some great pictures of your solution.
Visit the Challenge Page to get started.
After your team has completed the challenge, and filled in the Student Reflection Worksheet, you can submit your challenge to the judges. Part of the requirement is that you post a picture of your creation on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram and tag it with #PurplePlow so that all of the other teams across the nation can see it. Isn’t that awesome?
The judges will review the submissions and pick out the winners (there are some great prizes). But win or lose, the goal is to learn, have fun and connect with other students learning at home.
