Let’s talk Data!📊

Join us on Saturday, April 23rd at the Digital NEST, for a one-day workshop surrounding the topics of data science and social justice! We hope to gather as a community to envision the ways in which data science can be used for social change and how we can be involved in the movement towards data justice.

In this workshop, together we will learn about the impacts of data science technologies on marginalized communities today. How data has been historically interpreted and used to tell biased stories about communities of color. Who collects our data, how our data is collected, and what kind of data is being collected. Touching on topics regarding the misuse and misrepresentation of data, big data, machine learning and biased algorithms. We will also discuss the consequences that data has on access to resources— like education, job opportunities, and housing— policy making and the ongoing police surveillance of marginalized communities.

There will be activities and community engaged discussions where you will be able to explore how data plays a role in your life and in your community as a whole. To be more specific, you will have the opportunity to learn how to implement a data justice mindset through the development of an infographic design using information relevant to an issue you are passionate about.

We hope you will join us in collective skill-building, engaging conversations, and young professional networking. If you envision a more just, equitable and inclusive community, register now for our 1st Impactathon of the year!
