ACCORDS Primary Care Research Fellowship

The Adult and Child Center for Outcomes Research and Delivery Science (ACCORDS) Fellowship in Primary Care Research is a collaborative training program between the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus (CU-AMC) as well as affiliated institutions Kaiser Permanente of Colorado (KPCO) and Denver Health (DH). The goal of the Fellowship is to train post-doctoral professionals to become primary care research leaders addressing the nation’s primary care health delivery challenges.
The Fellowship is built upon the extensive mentorship experience of the Director and the mentorship team, a curriculum developed over many years of successfully training primary care researchers, and strong methodological expertise in 5 key proposed areas of emphasis:
- Dissemination and Implementation (D&I) Science
- Economic analysis to assess value-based care
- Community-based participatory research (CBPR)
- Health equity
- Mixed methods/qualitative methods
Trainees benefit from the breadth of our primary care research settings including practice-based research networks (PBRNs), an academic center (CU-AMC), an integrated delivery system (KPCO), and a nationally renowned safety net system (DH). In these varied settings, trainees develop innovative research and the skills needed to improve the quality of primary care.
ACCORDS trains eight fellows, with the majority completing in two years, but with the option for a third year for some. Trainees are able to get a Master’s degree and a certificate in D&I science. They complete mini-courses to supplement their coursework in the areas of emphasis as well as a career development curriculum. They receive intensive mentorship from a primary mentor as well as a mentorship team and complete 1-2 research projects leading to publication. They take an intensive grant-writing class and write a grant proposal focused on extension of their research project.
The program’s mini-course curriculum and work-in-progress sessions take place on the Anschutz Medical Campus on Monday afternoons. The times and locations of formal coursework for the MSCS degree and the certificate in Dissemination and Implementation science are accessible HERE.
Fellows are encouraged to focus their research in areas of priority to HHS and HRSA that are also areas of research expertise for our mentorship team:
- Reducing maternal mortality
- Opioid addiction/overdose
- Improving mental health access and care
- Value-based care delivery and quality improvement initiatives
- Telehealth
- HIV
- Health promotion
- Prevention, and population health
- Early detection
- Treatment
- Management of acute, episodic, chronic and multiple chronic diseases
