Red (A Brett MacLean Duet)

Rate this book
*This duet is a complete story with a full length bonus novel at the end.* Just when you thought you had it all...... It can be ripped from you in the most devastating way. Will you be prepared to fight? It started without trust. Passion. Lust. An all-consuming need; that was all we had in the beginning. Lies. Betrayal. Deceit. We moved past it all and fell in love anyway. Over ten years later, with a family of our own, our little world was perfect. Happy. But then that happiness faded away when she came into our lives. No control. No power. Just heartbreak and unwanted submission. We were forced to our knees at the sight of her. The words falling from her lips were like nails digging at our soul because we knew. We would have to go through hell to get out of this. And even then, I wasn't sure if it would be enough.

‘She was my one. My only.’

This is our first read by J M Walker, and although it was very different to what we initially expected, we readily consumed the first book of Red, loving the premise of the story; a married couple at the crossroads, desperate to hold onto their love, their family and each other when faced with an issue from their past that threatens their present and their future. Erotic and emotional, J M Walker captured the intense and all-encompassing love Brett and Evvie felt for one another, through her deliciously potent and intoxicating prose.

Red starts some fifteen years after Brett and Evvie’s relationship began, finding them content in their marriage, their three children, their financial situation, and not to mention their explosive sex life.

Initially we felt as though we had missed an integral part of the story when Brett’s past comes to play in the present, however, we urge you to stick with it, because the past is uncovered in book two. For us though, we would have preferred to have experienced the ‘past’ Brett and Evvie before we experienced their marriage today, and to fully feel the depth of Brett and Evvie, we would love to have read the Torn Series, to experience the full depth of this couples tumultuous love story before diving into Red.

Now, that’s not to say we didn’t connect to them or follow their story in Red, because we really did. We couldn’t help but experience the utter desperation of a man trying to hold on to everything he loves, and we’re so glad we continued with Red, because Brett and Evvie’s story was brimming with raw feelings, raw primal sex, and a story that played out against a past history that threatened to break apart the happiness this couple finally enjoyed, after a tumultuous start to their relationship. We couldn’t put it down, and by the end of book one, we found ourselves in a flood of tears, relishing in a man’s unwavering, consuming love for his wife.

‘I had been through so much and could handle everything life threw at me but hearing my husband break down and cry, destroyed me.’

Brett McLean, by his own admission, isn’t an easy man to live with. He’s always felt the need to be in control. In his career, women, sex, money and alcohol. It’s a coping mechanism he employs after incidents that happened when he was a boy. However, Evvie turns him on his head. His love for her is all consuming, and she is the one woman who controls him – Brett himself says ‘she captured my heart, reaching inside my chest and brought it back to life just by the sound of her laugh.‘ And there is nothing this man wouldn’t do to hold onto his wife. His love. His heart. His purpose.

“What I feel for you is deeper than love. It’s an all-consuming need. It’s like you have a firm grip on my heart and with one twist, it would shatter into a million pieces. You have that control, Evvie.”

Brett and Evvie have been through a gamut of painful experiences in their relationship from health problems, family issues, grief and pain. Their marriage has been tested again and again over the last fifteen years, but can a possible betrayal be the catalyst for causing a drift in this loving couple? Brett and Evvie are a very physical couple. They’re like magnets with a dynamic chemistry and their way of dealing with problems, is to seek that physical connection through sex, and boy do these two burn up the pages! Sex is how they work through their fears, hurt and disagreements. However, this time around, what they need is verbal and emotional communication, where sex doesn’t distract.

“I love you, Evvie, and I will spend every day until my dying breath, showing you just how much.”

The second book in the Red Duet (both books are included in the one) takes us back to the beginning when Evvie met Brett, to uncover the events that led to what transpired in book one. We didn’t find ourselves as invested in the second book as we were in the first. The emotional pull that was so very evident in the first book was missing, however, we absolutely loved the first book, feeling every ounce of the intense love, sexual desire, and emotion between Evvie and Brett.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher/author to review for Stephanie's Book Reports.

Red is the first book in A Brett MacLean Duet from J.M. Walker. You should expect to be left hanging since this is a duet. I will go ahead and warn you . I will also go ahead and say I didn't realize that Brett was a character from the Torn Series which for the life of me I can not figure out why I haven't read that series but I hadn't. With that said I didn't feel like I was missing anything without having read them first. It will however make you want to go back and read that series though.

It started without trust. Passion. Lust. An all-consuming need, that was all we had in the beginning. Lies. Betrayal. Deceit. We moved pas it all and fell in love anyway.

The first thing I loved about this book was that it is told mainly from Brett's point of view. There is nothing better to me than a well written male point of view. I love them and there aren't enough of them out in this world. Brett seems to have a perfect life with his wife Evvie and his three children. Then bam the hammer falls. I am not sure how to review this book. To tell you things that go on in it or to let you experience if all for yourself. I didn't read anything about this book before I dove in and that to me makes it so much better sometimes when it is all a surprise. I will say that his is a very emotional book and I felt like I had fought the war with Brett by the time I ended up closing this book. With that said I did not mind because having read a ton of J.M. Walker books I have learned to trust her with my heart and I know that everything though it may take some time is going to be ok. She has written an amazing book that you do not want to miss. I can not wait to get my hands on the next book in this duet.

4 Stars - 3 Flames

DISCLAIMER - Although you could read this duet as a standalone. I don't recommend it. You have to read at least the first book in the "Torn" series to truly understand what's going on. Including all the feels.

THIS BOOK!!!!!!

I have to admit that I wasn't really a Brett lover. I mean, I liked him, but he wasn't one of my favorite characters. But all that changed after reading this duet. This book is a little different from most. Usually we read a story; guy meets girl, story, HEA. But rarely do we get the chance to re-visit them after they marry and have children. In fact, I'm not sure I've EVER read a book quite like that, until now.
And here's the tip: Read this book ALL THE WAY TO THE VERY END. You'll be balling your eyes out. Just like I was.

First:
I think that this is the story that broke my heart in to little pieces. I'm a wife with kids and can completely understand the issues running through Evvie's beautiful head. The love, the doubt, the love. Don't know what the issue is yet? I'm not gonna tell you. You'll have to read it find out. But let's just say that it's so big, that it would ruin anyone's marriage.

Second:
Brett's POV of the first book in the "Torn" series. Sweet Jesus. This man. Re-living this amazing book through Brett's eyes was awesome!!! I like Evvie's POV, but I LOVED Brett's. And I was also reminded just how much I wanted to kill Claire. ARGH!!!!

Ok, stop reading this review and go pick up the book!!!

First off, If you haven't read The Torn series... Go read it first!!!!!
J.M Walker wrecked me with this book. I LOVE Brett and Evvie together and their story is definitely full of angst and love... BUT.... I KNEW it was too good to be true knowing what I know about the moody Brett McLean!!
Ok... I can't really say too much more without spoiling the story for you but I will say this... GRAB THE TISSUES and a bottle of wine or maybe 2.. you will NEED it!!!
Also reading the beginning from Brett's POV broke my heart all over again!!!

Note to the author: I love your reading but I think you secretly love that you make me curse you out while reading your books!!! Keep up the great work!!! I am definitely a reader for life!!!

This book is more than a romance. This is a book that made me think about forgiveness. What would I forgive in a relationship. I mean what would I overlook and what would be a deal breaker. When love is true you forgive and grow from it right?
Brett and Evie have through more than most, lies and betrayal in the beginning but they overcame it all and became stronger that ever. Now something from the past has come back to destroy what they have. Something that could make everything they have worked for crumple before their eyes. This is more than a heated romance this is a book that will break your heart and have you in tears till the very end. A romance that is fought hard for a love that is meant to be and unbreakable and smoking hot!

The first book I read by JM Walker was the Torn Trilogy.
I fell hard and fast for Brett Maclean even though it was through Evvie's eyes. I know its just a story but that is how I felt.
Now to see it through his eyes. Even him being his asshole self I still love him as I always have. His story has ripped me apart and stomped on my heart but he tried to put it back together! The whole book was emotionally draining!
I won't tell you why, I won't tell who or what happened but I you will feel the same way I do. I just know you will!
Thank JM Walker for the awesome story but I know all good stories come to an end again I thank you!!

Ok, Umm where does one start with this book! First off if you have not read the Torn trilogy stop what you are doing and read it! It will be the only way to understand the first book of this duet! Secondly, holy crap on a cracker the first book destroyed me! It literally ripped my heart out and was trampled on by a stampede of hungry elephants! Brett and Evvie went through so much in the first set of books and this book proves no different. Their love is tested once again, but not just their love but, their family as well. So much heart ache and pain, but a lot of good times as well. Just keep tissues handy because you will bawl like a baby! I know I did!

Book 2 was told in Brett's POV and damn that man is straight up alpha sex on two legs! He's just so damn yummy! I could eat him up! His demons try to get the best of him but, he powers on with the help of the love from Evvie. This book explains exactly what goes on in Brett's head the whole time, and it proved to me just how sadistic he could be. And boy does that make me love and want him more!

This whole set was written remarkably! I fell in love with these characters all over again! And it most certainly is going to be another book that JM Walker will have to top! Because yeah.. Wow, just wow!

JM Walker after reading this book I love you and hate you all in the same breath! superb job! Thanks for breaking my heart and somewhat mending it back together again!

I voluntarily agreed to read this book and this is my honest review!

Stop and read the Torn trilogy by JM Walker before reading this book, you don’t want to miss out on any of Eviee and Brett’s story. Evvie and Brett’s love story is one of the most heart wrenching, emotionally captivating, could not stop reading stories I have ever read.

In Red we get to see Evvie and Brett progressing through their lives together with their family. I was not prepared for the twists and turns in this book, I wanted to get off the roller coaster but then again I never wanted it to end. Reading Red left me with a book hangover like I have never experienced before. I was emotionally destroyed by this story in all the best ways.

I honestly dragged my feet when it came time to read Red, I didn’t want to face the fact that Evvie and Brett’s story was coming full circle. But JM Walker did an amazing job (as usual) in bringing their story to close, I cried, I got mad, I cried some more and then I cried because it ended. You have to read this series you just have to, to understand what all the reviewers are saying.

The second story is from Brett’s point of view, and omg that man just about makes you burst into flames!! In reading this story from Brett's point of view we get to know him on a whole new level. Defiantly a must read!! (fan's self)

I've read many of JM Walker's books and reviewed them, but I have to say JM Walker this is the BEST one yet !!

As if Brett and Evvie haven't been thru enough, J.M.Walker throws us this curve ball!
It is years later, they've settled into their routine and their life with their family. (And how I love to see that some things never change! Brett MacLean is still the same dominating Brett he always was!) But when a woman shows up out of the blue, she turns their world upside down.
It's harder when said couple cannot talk to each other; they yell and scream, then they end up in a wild mess of limbs and anger. But when is love not enough? A couple can only take on the world for so long before even they think they aren't strong enough. Can even the strongest of us make it through this, knowing they are going to have to face the one person they never wanted to see again?!
*Warning* The epilogue will DESTROY you!

The second of this duet is something I've always been hoping for...Possessed By You from Brett's pov!!! In here, we see the true turmoil he goes thru. How fast he truly and deeply falls for Evvie, how much he defeats Claire and his inner monologue with his thoughts to his mother. But don't think you know this story, there are a few surprises that shocked me!
Enjoy this part of Brett & Evvie.

Carla's Five Star Review

We first met Brett and Evvie in J.M. Walker's Torn series. Did I instantly fall in love with Brett? No. In fact, I thought he was a real jerk. However, as their story progressed, I slowly fell in love with him, and it became obvious that he and Evvie were truly meant for one another.

Before I go on with my review of Red, here is some important advice-To really enjoy this new book, you need to first read the Torn series as these books will get you up to date with Brett and Evvie's story.

Now for my review. First off, I loved that this part of Brett and Evvie's story was told from Brett's POV. I thought it provided a lot more insight into his thoughts and actions. Secondly, I think it was great the way this story offered us a glimpse into Brett and Evvie's lives today. With that said, you need to remember that nothing comes easy for this couple, so expect some drama, angst, and quite a few tears.

Kudos and many thanks to this author for creating a story that is sure to captivate the reader from beginning to end.

Red (A Brett MacLean Duet) I highly recommend reading The Torn Trilogy first as you get the background of Brett & Evvie's love saga. Also, it's fabulous & will draw you in & have you fall in love with Brett Maclean & Evvie's character's.

Reflected by You : After reading the prologue & chapter one I wasn't sure if I still loved Brett Maclean. I was knocked for a loop. I wasn't sure what to expect but this definitely wasn't it. It was so unexpected I was dazed. This author pulled it up a notch with this novel. The synopsis is highly intriguing & the prologue is just too Wow stunning to even put into words. This novel is raw, gritty, wickedly delicious, tormenting, jaw-dropping and crushes you body & soul. An all consuming devourable read that is brilliant. After reading the epilogue I was crying. An absolutely flawless ending to a beautiful tear-jerking love story.

Possessed: Possessed by You written in Brett's POV. A fabulous addition as I loved reading the novel over in Brett's POV as it just shattered my heart all over again.

WOW, talk about a book hangover! This was one of my most anticipated reads for this year. Brett is still one of my top book boyfriends even after all these years and I was so excited to get more. In true JM style this book makes you feel EVERYTHING! To say it's an emotional roller coaster would be an understatement. This couple has been through so much and RED isn't any easier for them. If anything, this was the hardest thing they've had to overcome. I cried. I screamed at both Brett and Evvie in my head. I wanted to throw my kindle across the room. That's how into this book I was. Even through all of that I had hope that everything would be ok. As much as JM rips our hearts apart she does an amazing job at putting them back together again. And the epilogue... just wow!!

The second book is Possessed by You written in Brett's POV.  Not only did I enjoy getting to see his side of things but also that we got to go back to the beginning.

Well done JM, well done.

To realize how excited I was to hear Brett and Evvie story continued in another book. I missed these two and the dynamic chemistry they shared was off the charts HOT. Their family life was good, until it wasn’t anymore due to Brett’s past mistakes. From the first page this book had you hooked, but at the end had you crying like a baby. Yes, that was me and I’m not afraid to say it.

We get a glimpse of how these two are living there lives together, but how much they still love each other even over time. You do get a really good storyline, some very steamy sexy scenes, and a family having a difficult time coping with Brett’s past mistakes. The love they shared is so unique that you were hoping everything worked out for them. If you have read other books by J.M. Walker, you know she keeps you guessing to the last page and that is what she did. From this book and on she has a way with her books they you can’t wait for what she has next.

Okay so before I go any further if you haven't read the Torn Series then go and one click now!!!!
I would definitely recommend reading that before starting Red.

Right so I can't tell you how happy I was to have Brett McLean back on my life. Red was a great story to get lost in, it's set a few year later than the Torn Series with Brett and Evvie married with 3 children. Things are great but their about to come to a massive bump in the road. The big question is, is their marriage and love for each over strong enough to wether the storm that's about to hit?

As this is a duet we also get a bonus story that's takes us right back to the beginning of Brett and Evvie's story which yes if you have already read the Torn Series you probably already have a great insight into how they met but that was from Evvie's pov now you get to hear Brett's side of the story. It's definitely not to be missed!!!!

Red is the conclusion to Brett & Evvie's story, it's been quite awhile since I read the Torn trilogy but this brought it all back.
This one unlike the previous books is told from Brett's point of view giving us a deeper look at him, his love for Evvie and his family even when he's being a complete dick.
Two happily married people are about to face something they never expected, a bomb will be dropped on them and their happily ever after is turned upside down.
Sometimes the struggle to make things right doesn't go as planned, some sins can't be forgiven, some hearts can't be unbroken.

Red was amazing. I found myself turning my anger on someone I never expected to and an ending that tore my heart out. I hate that this truly is the end of the road for these characters but that just means the author has to come up with someone spectacular to take their place!

Starting off, I wasn’t this couples biggest fan in the first stories. I enjoyed it but didn’t love them. Now they’re over a decade into their relationship and I found them to be much more relatable, while still passionate. It was easy to put myself into their shoes and imagine this scenario and how my emotions would play out, how the drama would unfold. I felt the writing of that was spot on and I felt the range of emotions that would surely accompany a bombshell revelation like that. Not only did this book hit the mark on emotions, it brought the heat and physical chemistry between characters as well. The epilogue is what clenched it for me! Without a doubt it’s the best epilogue I have ever read and will stay with me for a long time. This is a story of heartache, loyalty, human kindness and unwavering love. One of my best reads of the year!

After 10 years together and a family Brett and Evvie may have thought life was perfect - but Claire came back into their lives and did everything she could to destroy everything they had between them. Can they survive going through hell into order to survive this and can their relationship survive?

Goodness - a book that needs tissues, chocolate and wine. I'll try really hard not to spoil anything with this review just know you are in for a major roller-coaster. The book was well written and it was easy to understand. My only issue was that there was so much drama and emotion that it almost detracted from the story. My suggestion would be to read it in sessions and have a small break between them to pull it all together in your mind.

** Before reading this you really need to have read the Torn Trilogy in order to understand much of this and how it relates to everything else.

&*(&$%@#$... Yes, my brain is a mess after RED. If you haven't read the Torn Series I suggest you do first. While it's not mandatory, it should be. Anyway, Brett & Evvie are amazing, I love them. Like seriously Brett was one of my first book boyfriends and he still is. But this book took me on a roller coaster of feelings. The tears, oh the tears, Yes I cried, A LOT. I also felt warm and fuzzy, and the hotness that is Brett is still very strong in my senses.

Brett & Evvie have the perfect marriage, kids, house, the whole works. Until a past becomes the present. Can they survive? I am being honest and saying I am not sure I can/could survive what they go thru. But seriously grab this book and see for yourself! Oh and the epilogue, don't forget to read it. You will need it!

Red is the conclusion of Brett and Evvie´s story. Brett and Evvie´s epic lovestory started with the Torn Trilogy and ends in Red.
Red can be read as a standalone, but I strongly recommend to reda the books in order. You´ll have a much better understanding of their relationship.
Brett McLean and his Evvie are married for 15 years and have 3 kids. Their life was a up and down, but it seems they yre settled down for good, but now the most hurtful and true test comes up. Everything is breaking apart.
See what happens when a alpha Dom hits a wall and a submissive heroine has to make hard decisions.
Red is told in a dual POV and includes the new story Reflected and the first book in the Torn Trilogy, Possessed.
I really liked the story and the writing and I give 4,5 stars.

Aaahhhhh Brett it was so good to hear from you again I have missed you ;)

As always with Brett & Eevie life is never plain sailing & Brett of course doesn’t do himself any favours.

As life has moved forward for this couple somethings just keep them looking back to a place they constantly try to keep away from.... The Past!

I was excited to read more Brett.
I miss the angst and presence he had in the Trilogy, the going back and forth with the couple was a little like whiplash with Eevie which really wasn’t like her in previous books, but with troubles that faced them it was either going to be together or apart...
But would they be pushed far enough that they had to go in different directions???????

The ending, I’m still not ready to deal yet 💔

3.5 🌟

Brett and Evvie’s love is all consuming with an intense and passionate Dom/sub commitment. Now that they have a family, it seems everything would be smooth sailing but then someone from their past resurfaces and shakes the foundation of their love. This is a deep and moving journey to take with them as this couple has to figure out how to battle the latest pitfalls. The new issues they have to face cause old behaviors to resurface, the insecurities they both carry, can they battle back and trust the love they have built? My heart was on an incredible roller-coaster ride as I felt all the emotions for not only Brett and Evvie but their children as well. I voluntarily read an ARC of this book and this is my honest review.

Holy crap... this book was fantastic. I was hooked right from the start. I felt truly gutted. No really like ugly cry. It has everything you have come to expect from Brett and Evvie and so much more. I don't even know what to say. I was laughing then I was mad then I wanted to cry then it got HOTT...then the roller coaster started again. Drama check, romance check, sex check... check.. check. I fell so deep into the story I checked out of the real world for while. Amazing... The ending Oh My God. Full on emotional breakdown. I truly recommend this book completely..just grab a tissue like really grab the whole box and enjoy.

Red is the conclusion to Brett and Evie's story. To fully appreciate this book, you need to read the Torn trilogy.
This book takes place well into their marriage. They now have a stable life, with three children. Things are good for them. Until a woman shows up at the bar with a bombshell. Their lives are turned upside down and inside out. Can their love survive this? This story made me cry, yell and want to throw my kindle, but I loved it!! Word of warning, keep tissues close, you will need them, especially when you get to the epilogue.

I liked this book. I t can be read as a standalone but it might be better to start from the beginning.
Brett is walking the fine line between hot asshole and too much asshole to be loveable. What happens to him and Evvie is heartbreaking. I cried reading it at work. Maybe not the best place to read it! Evvie is strong. She's the rock of that relationship.
It was beautiful, heartbreaking and amazing.
I only wish it was longer.
The bonus story of their first meeting was great but we just know how it ends so it isn't the best moment to read it!
I highly recommend this book!

I fell for Brett and Evvie HARD and FAST! This story, their story, after everything they went through to be together in the first place, then once they got married, to NOW, and what did HE DO? It BROKE ME! It SHREDDED MY HEART! A hard lesson learned in love, always reveal what you think you shouldn't or else it can come back with twisted vengeance. I recommend tissues and wine, especially for the epilogue!
