Beyond the Border: Sir Walter Scott’s Minstrelsy in Story and Song

When the engines of Chelsey (Sully) Sullenberger’s Airbus A320 fail after a series of bird strikes, he takes the decision to crash land the aircraft into the Hudson River. Saving 155 lives, Sully is hailed a hero, but preliminary data from Aircraft Communications suggests the planes engines were running at idle power. Fearing this revelation may end his career, Sulley has to fight to prove that he made the right decision. Clint Eastwood directs this powerful depiction of one of America’s most recent aviation heroes, starring Tom Hanks. Dir: Clint Eastwood / 2012 / USA / 1h 36

Puccini’s thrilling Tosca is a story of love, terror, the abuse of power, and the unquenchable longing for freedom. When an escaped political prisoner takes refuge in a church, an opera singer and a painter are drawn into a twisting plot that puts them at the mercy of the secret police and its network of torturers and spies. Rivalling the splendour of Franco Zeffirelli’s Napoleonic-era sets and costumes, Sir David McVicar’s ravishing new production offers a splendid backdrop for extraordinary singing. Sonya Yoncheva stars as the titular prima donna, alongside Vittorio Grigolo as her artist lover and Bryn Terfel as the villainous police chief—one of his signature roles. Andris Nelsons conducts. Duration: 3h18m (Cast and running time subject to change)

Wednesday 31 January, 1.10pm £3/FREE to Music Centre Members

Margaret Bennett, Cameron Nixon and Aidan Moodie follow Sir Walter Scott’s quest for Scottish Border ballads, sharing anecdotes, historical tales, and humour, along with tunes and songs that have travelled the world. Please note, this concert lasts approximately 60 minutes.

Firebrand in Co-Production with The Byre Theatre and Heart of Hawick present

The Match Box

77

By Frank McGuinness

Award-winning Scottish theatre company Firebrand brings the Scottish premiere of the compelling play, The Match Box, directed by Richard Baron to St Andrews. Written by the celebrated, Irish, Tony Award winning playwright, Frank McGuiness, The Match Box combines lyricism and humour in a passionate story of grief, revenge and the temptations of evil. The play explores the shockingly brutal events that bring Sal to a remote exile on Valentia Island off the coast of County Kerry. Sal is an intriguing heroine, a woman to be pitied and feared in equal measure. Her story begs only one question of the audience; what would you do if pushed to the very edge? Described on its original production at Liverpool’s Everyman Theatre as ‘So brutally powerful it knocks the breath out of your body,’ by The Times, The Match Box asks what happens to a mother whose innocent child has been murdered in gang crossfire, once the cameras have moved on and when her bereavement is yesterday’s news? The Match Box features haunting, original sound and music by awardwinning composer Jon Beales and follows Firebrand’s mesmerising 2016 staging of solo play Grounded ( **** The Scotsman), with Janet Coulson returning to The Byre in another intense and darkly witty piece of heart-stopping modern storytelling. ‘Firebrand has the knack for identifying new plays destined to become contemporary classics.’ **** The Times, on Grounded

Eden Court, Inverness, presents the world premiere of

The Return

(12+)

By Ellie Stewart Directed by Philip Howard Saturday 24 February, 7.30pm – £14/£12 France, 1560. In the foothills of the Pyrenees, Bertrande tends to her livestock and mothers her young son, seven years after her husband disappeared. One day a stranger, Arnaud, walks into her life, and before long they decide to present him to the world as her long-lost husband – returned. But is it possible that it really is her husband? Inspired by the true story of Martin Guerre, The Return is a gripping play about the mystery of identity and the survival instinct, and asks whether we can ever truly know even those we love the best. Commissioned and premiered by Eden Court, and written by Ellie Stewart, a rising star of Scottish playwriting, The Return is produced by the same creative team behind Eden Court’s Not About Heroes in 2015. In Howard’s hands, this Eden Court, Inverness production lifts MacDonald’s play out of its own seemingly stiff-upper-lipped roots and invests it with a theatrical richness that gives it gravitas and depth The Herald on Not About Heroes

Created to mark the 30th anniversary of the end of the 1984/85 British Miners’ strike, award-winning choreographer Gary Clarke proudly presents COAL, a powerful and emotional dance theatre show about life at the coal face. It brings together Clarke’s striking physical language performed by seven professional dancers, a local cast of women and a live brass band, in a story about community, solidarity and survival.

‘An absorbing, immediate slice of history rendered with the kind of emotional truth that deepens its impact as popular entertainment.’ **** The Times For videos, interviews, photos and full info about the show go to www.coaltour.co.uk Against the backdrop of the Hanging Gardens, Semiramide, Queen of Babylon, defies bad omens and supernatural threats in her quest to find a worthy successor to her late husband. But she harbours more than one dark secret, and whoever gains the throne may find that he has lost more than he has won. Based on a story by Voltaire, this rarely performed tragic opera reveals The Barber of Seville composer Giaochino Rossini in a whole new light. The title role — composed for Rossini’s wife, Isabella Colbran — features some of the most demanding vocal music he ever wrote. Angela Meade takes on the challenging vocal fireworks in this revival of a production last seen at the Met 25 years ago. Duration: 3h 50m (Cast and running time subject to change)

Containing some of Sullivan’s catchiest melodies, this sunny, funny musical comedy concerns the marriage of two royal babies. Move forward twenty years and Prince Hilarion is keen to be reunited with his now adult wife, the Princess Ida. Unfortunately her quarrelsome father has hidden her away in a women’s only university where even the morning cock crow is managed by a talented hen. So Hilarion is forced to don a dress and even wield a sword to win his wife. Gilbert and Sullivan’s much loved satire of the founding of women’s colleges and Darwinian Theory remains as biting as ever, and will delight both avid fans of G&S and newcomers alike. The Gilbert and Sullivan Society of the University of St Andrews has been performing in St Andrews for over forty years. Known for sell out shows at the Edinburgh Fringe, ‘Come-andSing Days’, adaptions of rarely performed work and five star productions, the society remains one of the leading university G&S societies in the UK and a favourite amongst Fife audiences.

Fisk (14+)

Tuesday 8 May, 8.00pm – £12/£10 Weaving puppetry, movement and intricate design to create world class visual theatre. Fisk draws audiences into an atmospheric and immersive world, on a journey which will find joy in even the deepest and darkest of depths. Amidst a vast, cascading ocean, a tiny boat is tossed through rolling waves and thundering storms, a speck amidst turbulent seas. Steadily rowing forward into nothingness is a man, driven by despair. He looks out as the darkness looms and prepares himself to leap... But before he can jump out, something else jumps in. Fisk is a story of a man and a fish, and the unexpected impact they have upon one another.

Grandma and Lucy are up in the attic where all the memories are stored. Hidden in dusty containers at the top of the house, they have been waiting a long time to come out and play. Set to a live, original piano score, join our two playful characters as they discover a magical place filled with hidden treasures. Little ones and their carers are invited to watch and then join in an extravagant tea party under the stars.

‘Spell-binding fun for little ones.’

On the 19th May 1988, a young(ish) Fred MacAulay made his stand-up debut at the Mayfest So You Think You’re Funny competition in Glasgow with 5 minutes of his own comedy material. Much of what Fred talked about that night was about his (VERY) young family coupled with his wry observations about society and politics. These are themes which fans of Fred will be familiar with. His observations have led him to success on television and radio, as well as on the live circuit and at Festivals far and wide. We know Fred from QI, Have I Got News For You and Mock The Week on television, as well as Radio 4’s The Newsquiz, Unbelievable Truth and Just A Minute… as well as his 2017 stand up show Fred at the Stand.
