Beyond the Border: Sir Walter Scott’s Minstrelsy in Story and Song

When the engines of Chelsey (Sully) Sullenberger’s Airbus A320 fail after a series of bird strikes, he takes the decision to crash land the aircraft into the Hudson River. Saving 155 lives, Sully is hailed a hero, but preliminary data from Aircraft Communications suggests the planes engines were running at idle power. Fearing this revelation may end his career, Sulley has to fight to prove that he made the right decision. Puccini’s thrilling Tosca is a story of love, terror, the abuse of power, and the unquenchable longing for freedom. The play explores the shockingly brutal events that bring Sal to a remote exile on Valentia Island off the coast of County Kerry. The School of Modern Languages, in collaboration with The Byre Theatre, offers an exciting programme of events related to the literature, film and cultures of the world. Byre World showcases some of the research being carried out by the School of Modern Languages and brings together artists, filmmakers, writers and academics. Piotr Cieplak, 2017) Wednesday 31 January, 6.00pm FREE but ticketed The 1994 genocide in Rwanda claimed almost a million lives in just 100 days. Many Rwandans remember their loved ones through images of life, not death, the surviving images are precious objects, with so many destroyed and lost forever. The Faces We Lost follows nine Rwandans (survivors, relatives of victims and professional memory-makers), who guide us through their stories and share their experiences, remembrance and images. We are joined by the film’s director, Piotr Cieplak, for a Q&A after the screening. In Conversation with Monika Szydlowska Wednesday 14 February, 6.00pm FREE but ticketed Monika Szydlowska is an author of a popular webcomic Na Emigracji that illustrates the experiences of Polish immigrants in the UK. The Uncondemned (dir. The Uncondemned captures the untold, remarkable story that changed the course of international judicial history. Nueve reinas (dir. Fabian Bielinksy, 2000) Wednesday 14 March, 6.00pm FREE but ticketed Written and directed by Fabian Bielinksy, Nueve reinas (Nine Queens) is an Argentinian crime drama film about two con artists working together on a major scam in Buenos Aires. Human Zoos: The Couple in the Cage (dir. Coco Fusco and Paula Heredia, 1993) Wednesday 11 April, 6.00pm – FREE but ticketed The Couple in the Cage documents the travelling performance of Guillermo Gómez-Peña and Coco Fusco in which they exhibited themselves as caged Amerindians from an imaginary island. The screening complements the exhibition Human Zoos: Putting People on Display at The Byre (9 April to 7 May). The film is introduced by Dr Leshu Torchin and is supported by the Centre for Film Studies, University of St Andrews. Human Zoos in Scotland Wednesday 25 April, 6.00pm – FREE but ticketed This illustrated talk by Dr Emma Bond (Dept of Italian, University of St Andrews) complements the Human Zoos: Putting People on Display exhibition at The Byre and explores the stories behind the images displayed in the exhibition posters, which all relate to ethnographic displays that took place in Scottish cities just one hundred years ago, from alleged romances between Somali villagers on display in Portobello to the feats of Buffalo Bill in Glasgow.

Russian Jews (Film Screening and talk with Leonid Parfenov) Friday 27 April, 4.00pm – FREE but ticketed Join us for an evening with the acclaimed Russian journalist Leonid Parfenov and a screening of his latest documentary Russian Jews. Leonid presents the film and there is a Q and A session after the screening. Presented by CRSCEES and Genesis Philanthropy Group. The Enthusiasm Project Wednesday 2 May, 6.00pm FREE but ticketed In 1869, Welsh industrialist John Hughes founded the mining town of Donetsk in Eastern Ukraine, initiating a wave of migration from South Wales to Eastern Europe. 100 years later, in the present day, Ukraine and the Donbas are once again at the centre of a violent conflict that has led to the internal displacement of over a million people. Enthusiasm brings to life some of the elements of this fascinating and timely story. Project leaders Dr Victoria Donovan (Dept of Russian, University of St Andrews) and Stefhan Caddick are joined by composer Simon Gore to present Enthusiasm via music, image and discussion. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with the producers, writers, artists, and scholars who created or contributed to this documentary. Exhibition Human Zoos: Putting People on Display Tuesday 10 April to Monday 7 May – FREE A human zoo is a display of a particular group of humans for the purposes of entertainment, education or propaganda. Although particularly prevalent in the later 19th and earlier 20th centuries, human zoos have a long history and were held in a wide variety of national contexts, including Scotland. This exhibition and related events invites audiences to think about the practices of putting people on display.

Discover more about the people of the University of St Andrews. In conversation with the Chaplain, Donald MacEwan, key figures explore their path to the University, what inspires them in their research and their thoughts about the future of education. Wardlaw Professor, School of Psychology and Neuroscience, Professor Reicher researches the issues of group behaviour and the individual-social relationship, specifically a model of crowd action that accounts for both social determination and social change; the construction of social categories through language and action; and political rhetoric and mass mobilisation – especially around the issue of national identity. This Conversation follows the showing of Shock Room, a film by Kathryn Millard with whom Professor Reicher worked, about controversial Milgram experiments on obedience.

Pianist and renowned Debussy scholar Dr Roy Howat, Dr Charlotte de Mille (Courtauld Institute) and Dr David Evans (French, St Andrews) discuss the newly discovered premiere of his children’s ballet La boîte à joujoux (The Toy Box) and the role of pantomime and play in Debussy’s work more widely.

Concert: Pacifism and Pierrot Thursday 8 February, 8pm – £8/£6 Jennifer Witton (soprano) Lana Bode (piano) This concert of French song and piano music is a journey through the pleasures and pain of war-time life. The programme explores themes of pacifism, feminism and equality in rarely performed music by Germaine Tailleferre and Nadia Boulanger alongside familiar favourites by Debussy and Poulenc. The programme culminates in Debussy’s children’s ballet La boîte à joujoux (The Toy Box), premiered by the projected Workshops in 1915 as part of a series of pacifist concerts raising money for Belgian refugees. The ballet was performed not by dancers but by cardboard marionettes; Omega images accompany this performance.

The poor country boy Nemorino is in love with Adina, a confident landowner, but she is way out of his league – financially and otherwise. But when he buys a ‘love potion’ from a travelling quack, the results are rather more than he bargained for. Charmingly staged by Bartlett Sher, Donizetti’s beloved masterpiece combines deft comic timing with touching emotional depth. The production stars Matthew Polenzani, who enthralled Met audiences as Nemorino in 2013 with his moving Una furtiva lagrima. Rising South African soprano Pretty Yende is the spirited Adina, Davide Luciano makes his Met debut as the arrogant soldier Belcore, and Ildebrando D’Arcangelo is the potion-peddling Doctor Dulcamara. ‘The Phesant’s Eye’: Musical Delights from the Scottish Baroque Recorder player Mary-Jannet Leith and harpsichordist Thomas Allery explore some late 17th and early 18th century sonatas by composers from Edinburgh and Aberdeen. In addition to music by John Reid and William McGibbon, the programme will include James Oswald’s Airs for all Seasons: a set of character pieces named after plants which flower in each season of the year.

Ubu Roi The St Andrews Performing Arts Fund Performance Tuesday 17 & Wednesday 18 April, 7:30pm – £8 Alfred Jarry’s Ubu Roi caused riots in the audiences of its early performances in Paris. It is a sweeping farce full of toilet humour and cynicism, which inspired the aesthetics of Dada, Surrealism, and the Theatre of the Absurd. In this new version by Ryan Hay and director Gabrielle Uboldi, we follow the Ubu Empire from formation to its bitter end. It’s a scatological satire on leadership and excess, innovatively presented through hip hop, film, and incorporating an original score by local DJ Marcus Cork-Keeling.

Founded in 1984, TED is a non-profit organisation devoted to spreading ideas usually in the form of short powerful talks. Today the conference covers a whole host of topics, from science and business to global solutions and photography. At its core, TEDx University of St Andrews aims to provide a platform for individuals who have an idea worth spreading, working with the town and the University to inspire new and original ideas for a better future and achieve this by hosting an annual conference and this year the theme is Think Again. TEDx University of St Andrews is an independent organisation run by a dedicated team of students from the University of St Andrews. Hailing from a range of disciplines, from chemistry to social anthropology, sharing a common goal of delivering an event which inspires people to think creatively and effect change in their communities.

Lion is the moving story of Saroo, separated from his family in India under the most hopeless of circumstances at the age of just five. Tuesday 8 May, 8.00pm – £12/£10 Weaving puppetry, movement and intricate design to create world class visual theatre. Fisk draws audiences into an atmospheric and immersive world, on a journey which will find joy in even the deepest and darkest of depths. Amidst a vast, cascading ocean, a tiny boat is tossed through rolling waves and thundering storms, a speck amidst turbulent seas. Steadily rowing forward into nothingness is a man, driven by despair. He looks out as the darkness looms and prepares himself to leap... But before he can jump out, something else jumps in. Fisk is a story of a man and a fish, and the unexpected impact they have upon one another.

Grandma and Lucy are up in the attic where all the memories are stored. Hidden in dusty containers at the top of the house, they have been waiting a long time to come out and play. Set to a live, original piano score, join our two playful characters as they discover a magical place filled with hidden treasures. Little ones and their carers are invited to watch and then join in an extravagant tea party under the stars.

On the 19th May 1988, a young(ish) Fred MacAulay made his stand-up debut at the Mayfest So You Think You’re Funny competition in Glasgow with 5 minutes of his own comedy material. Much of what Fred talked about that night was about his (VERY) young family coupled with his wry observations about society and politics. These are themes which fans of Fred will be familiar with. His observations have led him to success on television and radio, as well as on the live circuit and at Festivals far and wide. We know Fred from QI, Have I Got News For You and Mock The Week on television, as well as Radio 4’s The Newsquiz, Unbelievable Truth and Just A Minute… as well as his 2017 stand up show Fred at the Stand.
